How the Public Cloud is Used by Coinbase, Samsonsite, Schrodinger, Edia, and Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team

How are companies using the public cloud today?

The public cloud offers many advantages to businesses, such as a more efficient IT infrastructure and operation.

Greater efficiency results in cost savings, making the public cloud an attractive option for a wide variety of businesses across industries.

See below to learn how the public cloud has helped various companies solve problems and achieve their goals:

Finance: Coinbase

Cryptocurrencies are increasingly gaining traction. The infrastructure that underlies cryptocurrencies make them secure, and they are also decentralized, which means they generally lie outside of the control of governments. Although cryptocurrencies are different from traditional currencies, they do share some commonalities. For instance, they can be bought, traded, and spent. Coinbase is a leading cryptocurrency digital wallet and exchange platform that facilitates the trading of cryptocurrencies. They serve over 20 million customers. Being a financial services company, Coinbase has to be constantly on the lookout for fraudulent activity. They make use of Amazon SageMaker to detect if IDs are fraudulent. SageMaker is a machine learning (ML) tool that allows Coinbase to build, train, and deploy ML  models. With this technology, Coinbase is able to quickly and easily check to see if an identification photo is fraudulent. This technology helps Coinbase to manage risk, while ensuring that customers are served quickly and effectively.

Motorsports: Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team

The Mercedes-EQ Formula E team races in the all-electric Formula E racing series. What the team has achieved in this racing series so far has been impressive. After entering the series in the 2019-2020 season, the team claimed the drivers’ championship as well as the manufacturers’ championship. While getting started, the team was on a tight schedule and needed to get up and running in time for the first season. One of the tools that helped them was the enterprise resource planning (ERP) product SAP S/4HANA Cloud. They were able to get SAP S/4HANA Cloud set up in three months, which allowed them to have access to finance and accounting tools to manage costs and track profitability. It also gave them the ability to run forecasts. Being fast on the business side helped them to effectively manage their operations, increasing their chances of success.

Manufacturing: Samsonsite

Samsonite sells luggage products in more than 100 countries. It’s a huge operation that makes use of multiple cloud platforms to power its business. Being in the luggage market, the company decided to release Bagsupport, which is a service that handles airline passenger claims for damaged luggage. Samsonite realized that they needed to use a cloud platform to scale their app globally. They chose to use Oracle Cloud Infrastructure due to the cost effectiveness, scalability, and security of the platform. With the cloud infrastructure, Bagsupport can serve multiple airlines on a global scale.

Gaming: Edia

Edia is a gaming company focused on creating unique gaming content. In order to reduce workloads, the company transitioned to severless mobile gaming infrastructure built by Microsoft and automated build and release processes with Azure DevOps. Doing this reduced the workload of their developers and sped up the build and release processes significantly. The new serverless environment that Edia can automatically scale up to support increased loads. Based on their experience with Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, they are planning on expanding into other content and offering their serverless computing experience as a service to other gaming companies interested in Azure.

Medicine: Schrodinger

Schrodinger uses cloud computing to carry out physics-based simulations to accelerate the discovery of new medicines and materials. Schrodinger’s work requires massive amounts of computing power. They started off with their own on-premises data centers, but this proved to be insufficient and costly. Instead, they chose to migrate their work to the cloud with Google Cloud. They chose to go with Google Cloud largely for its security. Google Cloud gives Schrodinger high processing power on demand. This means the company can run simulations in bursts that wouldn’t have been possible with their on-premises facility. In addition to the performance benefits, Google Cloud also helped Schrodinger with its bottom line, since they don’t have to deal with scaling up their own infrastructure.
