The Private 5G Market

Private 5G networks are a way for companies to provide high-speed, low-latency mobile access to its employees and customers.

With distributed, real-time data increasingly more essential for corporate operations, private 5G networks allow for complete control over their network connectivity without having to rely as much on third-party providers.

Private 5G market

The private 5G network market was estimated at a value of $1.22 billion in 2020. It’s expected to be worth just over $14.28 billion by 2028, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39.7%.

The North American private 5G market is expected to grow at a 17% CAGR until 2031

Germany, Spain, France, and Italy account for 40% of the European private 5G market

Industry-wise, the shift towards digitization in various industries such as oil and gas, retail, and health care, contributes to the growth of the global private 5G market.

Private 5G features

Private 5G networks are cellular networks built for the use of a specific demographic, such as the employees or customers of a business.

On a single-site basis, 5G networks are often deployed in one of two ways.

Hybrid 5G network

A hybrid network is built on top of pre-existing network infrastructure. This deployment strategy allows for the use of both 5G technology and the original system simultaneously.

This can be a transitional solution or a long-term arrangement that equally divides the weight between two network infrastructures.

Dedicated 5G network

A dedicated 5G network is an on-premises deployment with radio access that is built for the use of a single user, whether it’s a telecom provider or numerous offices of an enterprise.

A dedicated network can only be used to access the 5G connections and capabilities it was designed to handle.

Benefits of private 5G

The benefits of deploying private 5G networks go beyond the access to high-speed and reliable internet access. Companies benefit greatly from having their own private 5G network installed.

  • Reduced dependence on third-party 5G providers
  • Segmentation of data storage and processing needs
  • Complete control over the network’s security and access policies
  • Cost-effectiveness in the long run

“Enterprises should look for those that have rich experience in 5G networks and technologies to make it easier to build a dedicated private network, but they should be wary of vendor lock-in,” says Toby McClean, a member of the Forbes Technology Council.

“Private 5G is the next generation of mobile network, which aims to address mission-critical wireless communication requirements in public safety industrial operations and critical infrastructure.”

Private 5G use cases

Enterprises are using 5G infrastructure providers to build private 5G networks that meet their specific requirements, such as in this pair of examples:

The North Sea

The North Sea project is made of 14 wind farms in the Belgian North Sea. The increasing demand for off-shore clean energy generation means the hundreds of wind turbines in each farm need a reliable connection with the others in its vicinity.

With laws mandating that taller and more powerful wind turbines be installed farther away from the shorelines, this increased the time vessels spend away at sea. In order to not lose contact, Nokia assisted the project in keeping the wind turbines and traveling vessels connected at all times using the 5G-ready, Nokia private LTE system.

“The high wind speeds in the North Sea and Baltic Sea have proved beneficial in producing electricity at a consistent rate, making the offshore farms important for grid operations,” says GlobalData in its wind turbine market analysis.

National Composite Center

The National Composite Center (NCC) is an independent technology center that delivers research on the development of sustainable composites in the U.K. Opened in 2011, NCC works with over 600 professionals in office and at the University of Bristol.

With the help of Zeetta Networks, NCC deployed a private LTE/5G network as part of the 5G-ENCODE project. It helped NCC change and control security, connectivity, and reliability, offering a risk-free environment in the industry.

“This programme affords us and our industrial partners a unique opportunity to collaborate with prominent experts in the telecommunications, digital, and software industry,” says Enrique Garcia, CTO at the NCC.

“We are delighted to be a part of such a rare multi-sector consortium.”
